MTConnect Institute Releases Version 2.1 of the MTConnect Standard

McLean, Va. (January 12, 2023) – The MTConnect Institute, the standards development organization that maintains the MTConnect standard, announces the release of MTConnect Version 2.1; the Institute previously submitted MTConnect Version 2.0 to ANSI. The 2.0 version of the free, open, model-based standard that supports semantics for discrete manufacturing is a significant advancement from previous versions.

Starting with Version 2.0, the MTConnect information model is provided in SysML using an XMI Model Interchange (XMI) file rather than text documents. See Version 2.0.0 press release to learn about the benefits of a model-based standard over a text-based standard.

The release package includes the following:

  • The normative canonical MTConnect data model as XMI

  • SysML web portal with searchable index

  • Schema files as XML

  • PDF text documents generated from the normative XMI

Version 2.1 also includes the following concepts introduced and/or updated in the standard:

  • Battery

  • Charge and Discharge Rates

  • Following and Settling Errors

  • Leak Detection

  • Gravitational Force and Acceleration

The MTConnect standard is produced and maintained by volunteers from industry via the MTConnect Institute Standards Committee (SC) and its working groups. In addition to new data items, Version 2.0 saw the first normative SysML model with XML Model Interchange (XMI) available for integration into applications and development workflows.

The MTConnect Institute also made significant enhancements to the MTConnect Agent for this release. The Agent is a rewrite of the previous version, using a modern HTTP server and pluggable architecture. The new and updated Agent features are as follows:

  • Added MQTT Sink to stream data to an MQTT broker

  • Added certificate support to MQTT client

  • Embedded mruby scripting engine for dynamic transformation

  • Agent-to-agent replication and aggregation

  • Full-featured HTTPS server for static files with compression

  • Digital-twin three.js-based visualization demo included

MTConnect Institute Releases Version 2.0 of the MTConnect Standard

McLean, Va. (June 15, 2022) – The MTConnect Institute, the standards development organization that maintains the MTConnect standard, announces the release of MTConnect Version 2.0; the Institute previously submitted MTConnect Version 1.8 to ANSI. The 2.0 version of the free, open, model-based standard that supports semantics for discrete manufacturing is a significant advancement from previous versions.

Starting with Version 2.0, the MTConnect information model is provided in SysML using an XMI Model Interchange (XMI) file rather than text documents. Benefits of a model-based standard over a text-based standard include:

  • Information can be cross-referenced to reduce duplication and increase usability

  • Integrated relations and searches across all sections

  • The machine-readable model allows direct and automated interpretation by software systems

  • The SysML model can represent all constraints and relationships and verify information using automated tools

  • The release package includes the following:

o   The normative canonical MTConnect data model as XMI

o   SysML web portal with searchable index

o   Schema files as XML and JSON

o   PDF text documents generated from the normative XMI

  • Version 2.0 also includes the following additional components and data items:

PDES, Inc. and MTConnect Institute Sign Memorandum of Understanding

McLean, Va./Dallas, Tx. … The MTConnect Institute and PDES, Inc. are pleased to announce a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) designed to further collaboration and cooperation on factory data standards. Both organizations recognize the importance of not only standardizing within a business function, but also across functional domains. The PDES connected digital enterprise vision depends on integrating standards through the entire value chain, and MTConnect in turn benefits from standardized data that is adjacent to its own domain-specific semantic vocabulary. However, neither organization can achieve their vision without interfacing to a variety of industry data standards.

Emergent best practices for building and deploying industrial data standards offer a unique opportunity to shape the future of manufacturing enterprise data management today. Even world-class companies struggle to wrangle critical data and avoid siloed operations. PDES and the MTConnect Institute share many stakeholders and contributors, and will work to progress the industry by:

  • Cataloging and disseminating information on best practices for implementing data standards

  • Developing existing standards toward a shared vision for model-based enterprise

  • Identifying gaps where new standards development is needed and promoting that activity

MTConnect® Version 1.8.0 Includes New Data Items, New Asset Types for Quality and Material

McLean, Va. … The MTConnect Institute, standard development organization for MTConnect, announces the release of Version 1.8.0 of the MTConnect standard. Updates include:

  • New asset type for raw materials with associated new data items

  • New asset type for QIF (quality information framework) data which allows measurement, inspection, and similar data to be modeled and carried with MTConnect while maintaining compatibility with the QIF standard

  • New data items related to cutting tool status and maintenance

  • New data items and improvements to existing data items for coordinate systems

  • New data items for heat treat, autoclave, and thermal processes

  • Expanded part and process model to reflect states of processing, and added supporting data items

  • Simplified and consolidated data item subtypes throughout the standard

  • Cleanup and streamlining terms for information modeling and organization

  • Minor editorial corrections throughout

Final Version 1.x.x Release
After more than a decade, this will be the last Version 1.x.x release of MTConnect. Smart factory information systems are built on data models from multiple industry standards as well as proprietary models, and those information systems need machine-readable files rather than flat text or PDF documents.

Version 2.0.0, expected Spring 2022, will move from a text-based format to a model-based format to support better machine-readability. The normative, canonical information model for MTConnect will be an XMI file that can be navigated by a human user in a web-based model browser but also parsed automatically by other software. PDFs and XML schema will still be published, but will be generated from the model rather than manually written.

DMSC and MTConnect Institute Update Memorandum of Understanding

McLean, VA/Rochester, NY … The Digital Metrology Standards Consortium (DMSC™, Inc.) is pleased to announce an update to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the MTConnect® Institute. The original MoU was signed in 2011. As technology has evolved, both organizations recognize an even greater need to optimize the way industrial software and machines work together, to encourage manufacturing standards development, and to use data modeling to enable information interoperability by specifying the content of specific information and where it is stored – all with the goal of improving manufacturing efficiency.

DMSC and MTConnect are leading modern industrial standards development by crafting a common, standardized, machine-readable information schema. This makes it easier for software developers, quality managers, engineering, and manufacturing to use quality and manufacturing data together. By promoting the Quality Information Framework (QIF) and MTConnect integration, manufacturers will have availability to a wider variety of world class manufacturing machine and software solutions.  The two organizations plan to support and promote joint projects that will encourage integration and use of standardized information frameworks for parts and processes.

The Digital Metrology Standards Consortium (DMSC, Inc.), founded in 2005, is a non-profit consortium organization with the responsibility of developing and maintaining the QIF standard (ISO 23952-2020), and other metrology standards. The broader DMSC mission is to promote, foster, and develop interoperability standards and quality data frameworks for the manufacturing field of digital metrology.  The purpose of these digital metrology standards is to positively impact the digital thread for the Model-Based Enterprise (MBE).  The DMSC is an ANSI Accredited Standards Developing Organization, as well as an A-Liaison to ISO. MTConnect® Version 1.7.0 Includes New Data Items, Progresses Toward Model-based Standard Development

McLean, Va. … The MTConnect Institute, standard development organization for MTConnect, announces the release of Version 1.7.0 of the MTConnect standard. Updates include:

  • Expanding definitions for additive manufacturing. New data items added address controller and process states, materials and related systems, and deposition systems. These data items were created in conjunction with and after review of existing data standards efforts for industrial 3D printing.

  • New data items for complex manufacturing systems and machinery such as multi-head machine tools or flexible manufacturing (FMS) systems and cells.

  • Added data items for machine tools including for tool offsets and streaming variables. Refined data items related to cutting tools, tool groups, part programs, overrides, and speeds and feeds.

  • Added robotic data definitions related to part detection for load/unload operations.

In addition to new data items and information models, editorial cleanup of both text and tables progressed the standard towards publication of a normative XMI model produced with SysML. That machine readable model was first released alongside Version 1.6, but is expected to be the definitive source of truth for MTConnect within the next 2-3 releases. A human readable, text-based standard similar to all prior releases of MTConnect will still be produced along with the model-based representation in XMI.

MTConnect® Institute Celebrates First Release of Chinese NC-Link Protocol 

McLean, Va. …  After more than two years in development, the CNC machine tool interconnection communication protocol standard alliance under the China Machine Tool Builders Association (CMTBA) has released the NC-Link protocol in seven parts as T-CMTBA 1008.x-2020. The protocol published by the China-based consortium is localized for its home market, but nevertheless built for compatibility with the MTConnect standard (ANSI/MTC1.4-2018) and OPC Unified Architecture for CNC Systems (OPC 40502).

Thanks both to high-level coordination between CMTBA and MTConnect Institute parent organization AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology, and to a thorough technical review by the CMTBA consortium, NC-Link successfully lays a path to fully unified machine tool semantic models for all major global markets. Development on the necessary software utilities to co-deploy the two standards in a commercial setting began development immediately upon NC-Link’s release. The NC-Link/OPC UA tools are similarly closely aligned with the 2019 OPC UA Companion Specification for MTConnect (OPC 30070.1) as well as their German counterpart OPC 40502. Other machine building nations have thus far declined to develop their own unique semantic models.

Free, open standards remain the bedrock of digital transformation in manufacturing. Whether on the national or international stage, information and operational technology systems can only be built at full scale using standards-based approaches. These standards, in turn, require ongoing coordination and cooperation around the globe.

Election to membership is one of the highest honors that can be accorded an engineer.

A free, open-source, community-maintained MTConnect agent written in C++ is available at https://github.com/mtconnect/cppagent and includes version 1.5 updates and the version 1.5 XML schema. In addition to new data items, version 1.5 also saw the foundation laid for publishing a SysML model to accompany future releases. OPC Foundation and MTConnect Institute Announce Release of the OPC UA Companion Specification for MTConnect®

McLean, Va. & Scottsdale, Az. … The OPC Foundation in conjunction with the MTConnect Institute announce the release of the jointly developed “OPC Unified Architecture for MTConnect Companion Specification Part 1”. This companion specification makes the MTConnect semantic information model for machine tools accessible to a global audience leveraging the OPC UA Service Oriented Architecture. This OPC UA MTConnect Companion Specification incorporates all the features and functions of the XML based MTConnect standard.

The MTConnect OPC UA Companion Specification expresses the MTConnect stream and device information models via the OPC UA modeling language. This brings the benefits of data type enforcement, separation of the information model definition from its implementation, and improved MTConnect security via OPC UA end-to-end security.

“Critical manufacturing data needs both semantic definitions from MTConnect and the protocol and security features of OPC UA,” said MTConnect Institute President Douglas K. Woods. “This specification will benefit the large and growing user bases of both OPC and MTConnect by improving interoperability between the standards and the devices using them.”

MTConnect® is Now an American National Standard

McLean, Va. …  “ANSI/MTC1.4-2018” has been approved by the ANSI Board of Standards Review, earning MTConnect designation as an American National Standard for the first time in its ten-year history. The MTConnect Institute and its members moved to take MTConnect from an industry standard to a sanctioned, officially recognized effort beginning early this year. The Institute became an accredited standard development organization under ANSI in May, and accreditation for the standard completes the original goal.

Content in the standard remains unchanged from Version 1.4, but many global manufacturers demand accreditation as a prerequisite to adoption. Future revisions, new releases, and technical reports will also be sanctioned by ANSI. Version 1.5 of MTConnect is slated for public release in the first half of 2019; a timeline for ANSI designation of Version 1.5 will follow.

OPC UA/MTConnect® Companion Specification Published for Implementers

McLean, Va. …  "OPC Unified Architecture for MTConnect Companion Specification Release Candidate (RC) 2.0.4" is now available. The document is an overhaul and comprehensive rewrite of RC 1.0.2 (2013) that incorporates current features and functions of MTConnect and OPC UA.

Manufacturers demand streamlined, secure data. The MTConnect Institute and has developed a comprehensive semantic data model for Manufacturing Technology and has modeled that data into an OPC UA companion specification leveraging secure information integration from the embedded world to the cloud. Previously disconnected, disparate applications and devices can now be interconnected to take advantage of standardized data and information for manufacturing applications. This allows manufacturing applications to truly optimize production with significant increases in operational efficiency. 

“Standards harmonization is critical to the future of manufacturing,” said MTConnect Institute President Douglas K. Woods. “OPC UA has a strong user base in critical global markets and offers key features that many MTConnect users want. Conversely, OPC UA users will benefit from the robust semantic definitions for manufacturing technology that MTConnect provides.”

RC 2.0.4 was developed in a joint working group of the OPC Foundation and MTConnect Institute based on current OPC Foundation companion specification templates. While it is a complete and fully functional spec, a series of test implementations are planned for verification and additional input from prospective implementers is welcome.  Release candidate implementers should join the working group (https://www.mtconnect.org/working-groups) to log bugs and issues, provide input to the final spec, and help move to a formal release under OPC Foundation procedures.

MTConnect® Technical Advisory Group re-established as Standards Committee

McLean, Va. …  The MTConnect Institute has been accepted as an accredited standards developer under ANSI. To better align MTConnect procedures with ANSI, the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) has been re-established as the "Standards Committee." The Standards Committee is responsible for developing and approving the MTConnect standard, a function previously performed by the TAG.

Any interested company must opt-in by submitting a new application at www.mtconnect.org/join. TAG members that do not opt-in to the Standards Committee, as well as current Institute members at the “Implementer” level, will remain MTConnect Institute members. The Implementer designation has been phased out.

“MTConnect is an industry effort and the standard only gets produced thanks to those companies and individuals volunteering their time to standard development,” said Tim Shinbara, Secretary and Treasurer of the MTConnect Institute and VP of Technology at AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. “The Technical Advisory Group’s work has been rewarded with widespread adoption of the standard, and ANSI accreditation and their reestablishment as a Standards Committee is an important milestone.”

The move comes in response to increased interest in the MTConnect standard from industry and significant growth in membership in the MTConnect Institute. This accreditation indicates that the Institute’s standard development procedures adhere to ANSI’s Essential Requirements for due process, which include openness, coordination and harmonization, and compliance with normative policies and procedures, among others.
